European Explorers Project FREEBIES

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

This week we are wrapping up our European Explorer unit. It is a HUGE challenge to get these students to remember who did what, where and why! I even have a hard time keeping up with all of the different explorers. Therefore, we did a super fun project that brought our four explorers to life.

Make explorers come to life with this FUN project!

Students chose a card that assigned them to an explorer group and gave each student a special job (24 cards…I was lucky that 2 of my 26 were absent the day we did this so it worked out perfectly!):

Then it was time to get to work….

Tracing bodies for Explorer outline

Our project made the Explorers came to life!
Jacques Cartier
 Christopher Newport
 Juan Ponce de Leon
Christopher Columbus

Each group traced their explorer's route and filled out the information on the scroll. I'm sorry to say that I do not have a copy of the map (I made a copy from another teacher). However, here is a blank copy of the scroll:

The best part of the project were the presentations! I video taped each group presenting and then posted the video to our Shutterfly class website. This will be such an excellent tool for them to view and study from at home. My students always love seeing themselves "star" in a movie. Here is the "trailer" I used during my Daily 5 mini lesson on "persuasiveness" and later in the day I showed them the main video.

  1. I love it!!! I am filing this away for next year :)

  2. Awesome! They had a BLAST! Thanks for stopping by :)

  3. These are so cute! I just found your blog through Fifth in the Middle's linky by state. I teach outside of Richmond and love finding other VA bloggers!

Don't Let the Teacher Stay Up Late

  4. I ditto Melissa's post above...I teach 3rd grade in VA and just tested our Explorer unit on Friday. However, I think I may try this idea in May when we review for those SOLs! I'm your newest follower!

  5. Hi Julie,

I love this idea and am going to use it for my fourth graders. Quick question...what app did you use to make your trailer?

  6. Hey Ashley!

I just used the trailer feature in iMovie :)
