Appear.in: Easiest Web Conferencing Tool & App for the Classroom

Appear.in is hands down one of the easiest and most wonderful web conferencing tools I have come across. It was released in 2013 and has such incredible potential for classrooms around the world. Using technology for communication and collaboration is one of my passions and I was so excited when I stumbled upon this powerful tool last year.

It's FREE!

That's right...appear.in is FREE. It does have a premium upgrade that has some really nice features but all you need for the classroom is the free version.

No Registration or Downloads

Anyone can create and name a chat room which generates a link to share out. Visit appear.in and enter a name for your room:

Click Create new room and click the pink button to allow the tool to access your computer's microphone and camera.
Click the pink button to enter the room and BOOM, let the communication begin!

Join from ANY Device

Appear.in works beautifully on all devices.  For iPad users, download the iOS app HERE. For Android users download the Google Play app HERE.

Claim a Room

If you, the teacher, sign-up for a FREE account, you can claim a room to use day in and day out. I use my appear.in/____šŸ™Š ____ link over and over for various web conferences and lessons that involve communication with others outside the walls of a classroom.

Lock a Room

Your room can stay private with the lock feature. As soon as you join, lock the room. If outsiders try and join your room, a knock will be heard and you will have to approve or deny a message that pops up.

FREE Features
  • Up to 8 people can join
  • Screensharing
  • Stickers
  • Locking room
  • Mute
  • Video off
There are so many incredible ways you could use appear.in with your students. Some of those ideas include but aren't limited to:
  • Learning from others around the world
  • Practicing foreign languages with others around the world
  • Having guest speakers
  • Mystery readers (great for parents/family members who can't come to school)
  • Reading buddies at other schools
  • Tutoring students at home
  • Parent conferences
  • Allowing students to join class when they are at home
  • Collaboration projects after school
I love Rachelle Poth's idea for using appear.in for a scavenger hunt she sent her students on within their school. Read all about it HERE.
