How to Use Filmora to Create Memes

Come learn how you can use the free web tool, Filmora, to create memes. Students love creating memes in the classroom and this post will offer some ideas for educational uses.

If you are looking for a FREE way to create memes,  I highly suggest checking out THIS easy to use tool by Filmora.

Simply upload an image, video, GIF or enter the URL and start creating! No login is required and creations will download without a watermark. You have the option of exporting as a jpg, png, gif, or .mp4.

How to Make a Meme

Here are the steps I took to create the hibernation meme above:

1. I visited Pixabay to find a free stock photo of a bear and saved it to my desktop.

2. I uploaded the image into Filmora's meme maker. The first step is to edit your image. You have the option to crop it. In this case I wanted the entire image to appear so I dragged the corners of the box to the outside corners of my bear image and clicked OK.

3. Once you edit your image, you will be taken to this screen in which two text boxes will appear on top of your image. Since my image is a close up, I wanted the meme text to appear on the outside of my image. I deleted the inside text by clicking on the trashcan icons next to Add Top Text and Add Bottom Text.

4.  I selected the Text Outside tab and typed my text into the top text and bottom text boxes. You can change the text size, alignment, font, font color and the color of the text background (white or black).

5. I selected my file type and clicked Create.

6. I clicked Download and I was finished. SO EASY!

How to Make an Animated Meme

To make an animated meme you follow the same exact steps mentioned above. The only thing I did differently to create the dictionary meme was where I went to find an animated gif and how I uploaded it to Filmora. I visited Gifs4Kids to find a gif and copied the image address:

I then pasted the image address into Filmora's meme maker and clicked Upload.

Using Videos to Create Animated Memes

There is also the option to upload your own video clips to Filmora Meme Maker to turn into a video meme. Once you have uploaded your clip you have the option to trim your video.

Simply use the scissor sliders to trim the start and end times of your clip.

The steps for adding text to your video meme are exactly like the image and gif memes mentioned above. When your meme is complete you can download it as a .mp4 or gif file.

Students Use

If you were going to have students create memes in class then you might consider having them find copyright free images or videos using one of THESE tools or find animated gifs to use using THIS tool. Students could create memes to go along with academic concepts (like the hibernation and reference source (dictionary) memes pictured above), create animated vocabulary journals (see THIS post for more details), practice using different literary devices, make digital citizenship meme posters for the classroom, the possibilities are endless!
